The Tour of Mont-Blanc

Conditions June 3rd 2018

3 June 2018

The trekking season has finally begun and the TMB is starting to be frequented. The conditions of the route gradually improve, but the snow is still abundantly present on the trails. For this reason, we recommend paying close attention to the main dangers you will face:

  • Crossing the streams: the snow bridges on the streams begin to weaken, choose carefully where to pass;
  • Cold nights: the snow turns into ice during the night and the danger of slipping on the traverses is strong; do not leave too early in the morning and wait for the snow to soften;
  • snow stability: there are not many risks of snow discharge on the path, but it is still possible that some plaque detaches from the steepest slopes (especially at Grand Col Ferret).

Regarding the various sectors, we highlight:

  • Col de la Croix du Bonhomme and Col du Bonhomme (France): snow-covered and feasible on soft snow;
  • Col de la Seigne (Italy - France): snow-covered and feasible on soft snow;
  • Grand Col Ferret (Italy - Switzerland): path marked but lots of snowfields present; feasible on soft snow, however, pay close attention on the traverses and the crossing of the torrents (collapsing snow bridges);
  • Alpage de Bovine (Switzerland): better circumventing the canal de la Giette, the rest is feasible;
  • Col de Balme (France - Switzerland): snow-covered but feasible.

In any case, it is recommended to be very careful and adequately equipped, always get informed by the hut manager before facing each stage and, if necessary, be accompanied by a professional.
